The most important thing you can do for your golf cart is to maintain the batteries properly.  It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with this knowledge before you use the golf cart.

Golf cart batteries are not maintenance free.  You should at least have the following equipment on hand to aid you with battery maintenance:  a wrench, distilled water, a voltmeter, a hydrometer, a post cleaner, baking soda, petroleum jelly and goggles and gloves.  Gloves should be acid proof.  Always keep the water and baking soda nearby to neutralize any acid spills.

Golf carts are usually powered by six lead-acid batteries mounted beneath the front seat.  Always examine the outside appearance of the batteries and look for any cracks in the container and the top of the battery.  Posts and connections should be kept free of dirt, fluids and corrosion, and be sure to replace any damaged batteries.

Check the vent caps and make sure they are all tight and clean the battery top with a cloth or brush and a solution of baking soda and water.  You do not want cleaning solution, etc., to get inside the battery.

Clean battery terminals and inside of cable clamps with a post and clamp cleaner.  Reconnect clamps to the terminals and apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly.  The area around the batteries should always be kept clean and dry.

Do not add water until the battery is fully charged.  Always keep a check on the water levels.

The key things to remember with battery maintenance are the following: do not allow plates to be exposed to air and do not fill the water all the way up to the cap.  You should only use distilled or deionized water.  Check water levels weekly.

Finally, keep the manufacturer’s instructions in a convenient place to refer to.

The brand of battery is important to pay attention to when purchasing.  Golf cart batteries are usually sold under different local brands but two of the best are Trojan and US Battery.  A cheaper option is Exide.

You also have to consider the type of battery your golf cart will need. 6V are good for smaller golf carts, but not built to last.  V8s are made to outlast the warranty most of them come with and are better suited for heavier golf carts.  Battery prices can range from $75 – $400.

Always keep in mind the type of golf cart you have, the speed you want, and the weight of the golf cart to help you determine the type of battery you will need.
